National Route 66 Museum
Elk City, OK
TAP ARCHITECTURE was commissioned to design two phases of the museum fronting historic Route 66 in Elk City’s Old Town Museum Complex. The building facade depicts storefronts familiar to the “Mother Road” in the years 1907 through the 1950′s.
Period vignettes are organized in a highway motif to offer visitors a nostalgic journey through eight states along Route 66. Murals, recorded histories and personal accounts guide museum goers through vintage gas stations, motor courts and colorful diners from Chicago to California.
The Museum was featured on the cover of Oklahoma Today August 2002: “45 Places Every Oklahoman Should Go.”
