Route 66 Museum Interpretive Center
Chandler, OK

The design concept for the transformation of the Chandler Armory into Route 66 Interpretive Center presents the design challenge of renovation and repurposing of a historic building for exhibition and multi-use by the entire community of Chandler, Oklahoma.

The renovation of the Chandler Armory included repair of the roof, windows and the installation of an HVAC system, along with updates to the plumbing and electrical systems. The eastern half of the structure was designed as the primary Route 66 Interpretive Center, which includes exhibit space, a gift shop, storage and restrooms. The Drill Hall, located in the western half of the building, was developed as a community center, intended for regular use by the Interpretive Center and the community. The Drill Hall is purposed for activities ranging from car shows to theater performances or plays. A ground level catering kitchen was designed, as was a stair and elevator to access the mezzanine.

The primary experience of the Route 66 Interpretive Center involves interaction with the exhibits. Designed with the simplicity of an art gallery, lights, sounds and visual aids create a full and memorable sensory experience in the exhibit area. The southern portion of the Interpretive Center focuses in more traditional exhibit form on issues of local interest.
