MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. ELEMENTARY

TAP ARCHITECTURE © 2018

TAP ARCHITECTURE was selected to design the first elementary school constructed under Oklahoma City’s MAPS for Kids program. TAP  communicated closely with a multi-faceted stakeholder group using graphic designs throughout the approval process to ensure clear understanding among the architect, the owner, the neighborhood and the users.

Designed within a tight budget and on an even tighter urban site, the elementary school can accommodate 900 students in grades K-6.  The program includes 56 classrooms, athletic fields and a “cafetorium.” A Library and Media Classroom Center are located just inside the main entry, reinforcing these rooms  as the true heart of the school.

This project allowed TAP to re-examine conventional thinking towards elementary schools as it faced the challenge to create an environment with boundaries needed by children, but with flexibility to respond to future needs.
